Where is First Reformed going?
The foundation of our church is Jesus Christ who is the Word of God in the flesh (John 1:14), and the written word of God, the Bible, which is written through the guidance of the Holy Spirit and is without error (2 Tim. 3:16). God’s holy written word will teach us who He is and how to live out in our lives the person and work of Jesus Christ His only begotten son.
The church is not intended to be a closed off from the world. We have been left in this world to be its salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16). Too often we think of that world as the walls of our church buildings. It is not. Our mission is to take the Word of God, with the loving kindness and compassion of God, to all people.
All people include the majority who do not come to church. We each need to identify our own gifts and abilities received by the Holy Spirit and employ them in touching the lives of others. It could be a visit to a shut-in or a casserole to a sick family or a shoveled walk or whatever opportunity God brings our way to declare His love, His holiness, and His message of salvation. We must not be isolated but engaged.
That is where First Reformed is going.
