Where did Cain get his wife?
This is certainly one of the most asked questions. The answer is clearly implied in Scripture though not ever explicitly stated. People like simplicity, like give me the chapter and verse. The Bible is a complete book and it is important to know more than just a verse to understand it. Paul told Timothy, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.” For any full answer we must not seek just a chapter and verse, but seek to divide the word of truth.
The broader question to the one asked would be – who did any of Adam and Eve’s children marry? The answer would have to be – each other. Within a generation it would be kissing cousins. Within two generations it would be more distant cousins and so forth. Even Abraham, the great father of the faith, married his half sister as recorded in Genesis 20:12.
But, back to Cain. The account in Genesis 4 is not stamped with a date for all the events. There could easily be a gap of 20 or more years between 4:16 and 4:17. We know that after the death of Abel that Adam and Eve had other children. 4:25 says they soon afterwards had a son Seth. Then in 5:4 it says they had other sons and daughters. They could just as easily had other children before the death of Abel. 5:4 only tells us how long Adam lived after Seth’s birth, not if all the mentioned children were born after Seth’s birth. So Cain, like all the other children of Adam and Eve married his sister.
