"Why do we believe the Bible to be "the Word of God"?"

The first reason that we believe the Bible is the Word of God is because it says that it is. Paul writes to the Thessalonians in chapter 2 verse 13 and says, “Because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God”. This is only one of 49 times the Bible refers in one way or another to the word of God as the Scripture. Jesus says in John 10: 35, “Unto whom the Word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken”. In Acts 6 Peter says that the disciples couldn’t leave their responsibility to preach the word of God to wait on tables. Thus began the role of the deacons in the New Testament. We see this is a common way for those in the Bible to refer to the Bible.

Another reason we look at it this way is because of how many times find the phrase, “The Word of the Lord came to . . .”. We constantly find God speaking His word to someone and it being recorded as “God spake to . . .” or “The word of the Lord came to . . .”. If God’s word comes to someone or He speaks to someone we understand that the speech is rightly defined as the Word of God. As to this Jesus Himself testifies that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

Finally we call it the word of God because we do not believe that it emanates from man. Paul writes to Timothy and says that, “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God” (II Timothy 3:16). This literally says that scripture is the exhaled breath of God. It is as if God breathed onto a page of paper and the eternal Scriptures appeared. Of course this isn’t how it was done, but we are told exactly how it was done in II Peter 1:21, “for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” The words that we have then are the words of God and they are eternal as revealed in Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” Again we can see from the Psalms in Psalm 119:89, “Forever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven.” These are the reasons that the we believe the Bible to be the Word of God.
